Electromagnetic  waves :

According to Maxwell,

the electromagnetic waves are those waves in which there are sinusoidal variation of electric  and magnetic field vectors  perpendicular to each other as well as right angles to the direction of waves propagation. 


Notes :—

  • these waves do not require any material medium for propagation. 
  • these waves travel in free space with a speed  3×10⁸ m/s

● Since, waves can be produced by moving a charged body or a magnet to and fro in an oscillating manner, 

Relation between  frequency and wavelength 



Electromagnetic spectrum:

The wavelength of  different electromagnetic waves  decreases in the following order👇👇

Radio waves  >  micro waves  > Infra - red  > Visible(Light)  > ultraviolet rays  >  X-rays > γ-rays

Penetrating power : It is stopped by 5 mm thick Aluminum foil. Ionising power : Less than Alpha but more than Gamma rays. Gamma rays:— Nature : Electromagnetic waves of very short wavelengths.
