Law of multiple proportions

Some Basic concepts of chemistry  #06

law of chemical combination

3. Law of multiple proportions:  the law states that--
"when two elements combine to form two or more compounds,  the different masses of one of the elements, which combine with a fixed mass of the other elements, bear a simple ratio of whole numbers to one another."

  • Limitations: the law of multiple proportions doesn't  apply to such compounds, e.g in butane( C4H10 ), pentane (C5H12) and hexane(C6H14), it is found that 12 parts by mass of carbon in each case combine with 2.5 : 2.4 : 2.33 parts by mass of hydrogen respectively.  The mass ratio of hydrogen is not bear a simple ratio.
